TERRE del BORGO is a project born in Puglia from the idea of the Iannone brothers, located in Borgo San Giusto in the Torrebianca area, a hamlet of the Municipality of Lucera (FG). The geographical position and the related terroir are the basis of the quality of these native and ancient plants, which have become the distinctive feature of this land of excellence.
Today, the three young brothers aim to make TERRE DEL BORGO extra virgin olive oil known to all those who prioritize quality, making it accessible in line with modern times and societal changes. Their aspiration is to bring the flavors of a land rich in excellent products into consumers’ homes, along with the love and passion for olive oil. These two uncontaminated values have guided the family’s choices since ancient times, with the hope of passing them on to future generations.
The innovative characteristic of the third generation of the Iannone family is their ability to leverage new communication tools while staying true to tradition and rural culture.
THE HISTORY
TERRE del BORGO was born thanks to the teachings of Grandfather Domenico, a man who always loved these lands as much as his own family, harvesting fruits with the utmost respect for nature. For generations, the Iannone family has cultivated olive trees, caring for them daily with dedication and love, but most importantly, with sun, wind, and rain—the only factors nurturing the olive grove.
Grandfather Domenico never worked his plants artificially, emphasizing the importance the family has always placed on respecting the natural life cycles of plants and seasons. The practice of natural agriculture has allowed these plants to adapt to the territory in an indigenous way and grow healthily without human artifice. Today, this would be called BIO.
“Borgo San Giusto for us brothers is the symbol of our family, representing its roots and values. These are the reasons why we decided to return to our origins, rediscover its scents and flavors to continue transmitting the passion and love that this land gives us.”
Domenico, Luca, and Andrea
THE TERRITORY
For the production of TERRE del BORGO DOP Dauno extra virgin olive oil, the typical cultivars of the area are used, processed in olivaggio according to tradition. The olive groves stand at about 400 meters above sea level and benefit from the nearby presence of the Daunian Mountains, which surround the territory. These generate strong winds that make winters harsh and allow the plants a slow and late fruit ripening. All these factors create a unique micro-climate and give the plants characteristics that enable the production of high-quality extra virgin olive oil.
THE CULTIVARS
- Coratina: also known as Racioppa di Corato, it is found in parts of Puglia, particularly in the provinces of Bari and Foggia. The oil produced has a yellow-greenish color, with a flavor dominated by bitterness, accompanied by a good spiciness and a light taste of leaf and artichoke.
- Ogliarola Salentina: or Leccese, also called “Pizzuta”. The oil produced has a golden yellow color with greenish reflections, a sweet fruity flavor when fully ripe, and excellent resistance to rancidity.
- Peranzana: also known as “Provenzale”, mainly cultivated in the Foggia area. The oil has notable characteristics such as a higher content of chlorophyll and carotene, and a longer rancidity time compared to other oils. The flavor is clear, spicy, and round.
- Leccino: a particular variety of olive with vigorous and late fruiting, providing greater protection against cold. The oil has scents of olive, fresh grass, artichoke, almond, vegetable, and spiciness.
- Rotondella: mainly present in the inland areas of Campania and the plains of Puglia bordering Molise. It has great drought resistance and late maturation. The oil has balsamic aromas such as rosemary and mint, spicy notes of black pepper and cinnamon, with marked bitter and spicy notes.
